upgrading past speedball

Post by rini »

My hubby and I have a business which includes t-shirts. We've been doing this for about 3 years now, and are moving up past the dreaded Speedball materials.

We're almost finished with our 4-color press (http://www.printingplans.com) and we're going to start doing more complicated designs than the simple 1-color we've been doing. I think we've decided to try Matsui water-based inks, as we're in Denver, and we've been told that Matsui dries less fast than Permaset (we don't like plastisol, either how it looks, or feels). What I'm wondering about is brands of screens to recommend, any other photo emulsion than Diazo, and a good place to buy supplies. We've been buying them from a local Guiry's and art supply store, but all they have are the dreaded Speedball products.

Also, what type of dryer/curing machine to use? And, where we can get one for cheap. We've just been ironing the shirts, as it's simple, and free, but extremely time consuming.

We don't have to worry about really technical aspects of screen printing, because none of our designs are that terribly intricate or complicated; most of it is basic text things (http://www.etsy.com/shop/naniwear?section_id=7102084 for examples of what we do). This is why I think we'd be fine with just water-based inks. Some of the designs we want to do for t-shirts are like these: http://www.etsy.com/listing/75044707/yaoi-2-inch-button, http://www.etsy.com/listing/76414393/to ... us-express.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
